Captive Portal Redirects, Explained for Non-Network People
If you have ever joined a coffee shop's Wi-Fi and had a login page appear out of nowhere, you have used a captive portal. It is one of the most common pieces of network machinery in the world, and one of the least understood outside of IT departments. For venue operators evaluating Wi-Fi surveys, understanding the captive portal, and specifically the redirect that happens after it, is the key to understanding how the entire model works without a single piece of new hardware.
What is a captive portal
A captive portal is the gatekeeper page a Wi-Fi network shows to new devices before granting internet access. When a phone joins the network, the network holds the connection in a pending state and serves the portal page, which might ask the guest to accept terms, enter an email, or simply tap a connect button. Once the guest completes that step, the network authenticates the device and opens the connection.
Every major Wi-Fi gateway vendor builds this capability into its platform. Cisco Meraki, Aruba (HPE), Ruckus, Ubiquiti, and Cambium Networks all support captive portals as standard functionality, which is why venues from airports to arenas already have one running today, whether or not they think of it in those terms.
The redirect mechanics
The part that matters for surveys is what happens in the second after authentication succeeds. Every gateway platform supports a setting, usually called the post-login redirect or success URL, that tells the network where to send the guest's browser once access has been granted. Most venues leave it pointed at their homepage, where it quietly accomplishes nothing.

The guest connects exactly as before, gets their internet exactly as before, and then lands on a short, branded survey as the first thing they see while fully connected. Safety and privacy
Because the redirect happens after authentication, it changes nothing about the network's security posture. The guest's access is not conditioned on the survey, the survey never touches credentials, and the network's existing terms and consent flow run exactly as before. The survey page is an ordinary website the guest's already-connected browser visits, no different in kind from the homepage the redirect used to point to.
On the data side, responses are voluntary and the guest can close the page at any moment with their connection intact. That voluntariness is not just an ethical nicety. It is what makes the data trustworthy, because every response comes from a guest who chose to give it.
Turning a redirect into a survey
The redirect delivers the audience. What the survey does with the next 28 seconds determines everything else.
